The men's team is headlined by Olympic champion and 2022 winner Tamirat Tola while defending champion from two years ago in Budapest, Amane Beriso will be in Tokyo from 13 to 21 September where she will go for back-to-back titles, a feat only achieved by Kenya's Edna Kiplagat in 2011 and 2013.
The federation has given athletes who have complaints regarding the selection the chance to submit their grievances in writing within five working days.
Tola earned Ethiopia’s only gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics in an Olympic record of 2:06:26 on a uniquely testing course, and in gruelling conditions.
This, despite the fact that he had only been called into the team with two weeks’ notice as a replacement for his injured compatriot Sisay Lemma.
He heads to Tokyo keen to replicate his 2022 exploits, having led an Ethiopian 1-2 in Eugene, Mosinet Geremew settling for silver.
He will be joined on the starting line by Tadese Takele who has already dominated in the Japanese city this year, winning the 2025 Tokyo Marathon as well as Deresa Geleta who settled for silver in the same race.
Milkesa Mengesha, winner of the 2024 Berlin Marathon has been named as the only reserve for the men's squad.
Meanwhile, title holder Beriso, who placed fifth in this year's Boston Marathon after clocking 2:21:58 is set to line up alongside Tigst Assefa, the Paris Olympic silver medalist and winner of this year's London Marathon.
