The 3000m Olympic steeplechase bronze medalist Faith Cherotich claimed victory in the women’s event at the Brussels Diamond League on Saturday night, dethroning Bahrain's Winfred Yavi, who finished second.
Cherotich celebrated joyfully after crossing the finish line, having overpowered Yavi with a powerful final sprint.
The Kenyan-born Bahraini Yavi, who had stayed with the lead group for most of the race, was unable to respond to Cherotich's late surge.
Cherotich started strong, staying in the lead group with Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai and Yavi from the start.
She unleashed her sprint in the final barrier stretch, finishing in 9:02.36. Yavi followed closely in 9:02.87, while Chemutai took third with a time of 9:07.60.

Gesa Krause from Germany set the early pace, but after the 1000m mark, Cherotich, Yavi, and Chemutai surged ahead.
As the athletes approached the 2000m mark, Chemutai took the lead from Yavi but couldn't maintain her pace as they neared the final 800m.
At the bell, Cherotich pulled ahead, with Yavi and Chemutai close behind. However, by the final barrier, the race had narrowed to just two, as Chemutai couldn’t keep up. Sensing victory, Cherotich accelerated, determined to claim the win.
She crossed the line just microseconds ahead of Yavi. Although she fell short of both the world and meet records, Cherotich’s performance reignited hope for Kenya’s future in the event.
