Ferdinand Omanyala is not shying away from the scale of his ambition this season. Following months of rebuilding, the African 100m record holder has made it clear that his target goes beyond consistency, as he aims for the fastest time in 2026.

Omanyala’s return to form has been steady but deliberate. At the Addis Ababa Grand Prix, he broke a 20-month wait for a sub-10 performance, clocking 9.98 seconds to win.

Days later, he sharpened that statement at the Kip Keino Classic, running 9.96 seconds to reclaim the title he last won two years ago.

Those performances have placed him back in contention, but the world-leading mark of 9.89 seconds, set by Collen Kebinatshipi at the Botswana National Championships, remains the reference point.

“Now that I have built up momentum, I have to stand on business. I am hoping for a sub-10-second race, but at the back of my mind, I am looking at the world lead,” Omanyala said.

Central to this shift has been his decision to reunite with his former coach, Duncan Ayiemba. This partnership has anchored his rise. The sprinter described the move as a necessary reset after a season that never quite settled.

“Dan is the right doctor for me. We have worked together for a couple of years, so I thought it wise to go back to the drawing board,” he noted.

“A couple of things have been put together. The world is also evolving, and we have to move with it. The team is working around the clock to ensure we get back on top,” he continued.

Last season, Omanyala’s campaign was derailed early by injury, which affected both his training rhythm and race output. By his own admission, that led to uncharacteristic performances.

“When we started last season, I had an injury, and I was struggling in training, running some very weird times,” he said.

The difference now, he points out, is visible.
