Kenya’s athletics fraternity has again been thrown into mourning following the untimely demise of former world 800m U20 champion, Kipyegon Bett.

Bett who in 2017 won bronze in the same distance at the world championships in London is reported to have died on Sunday at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet County where he had been receiving treatment.

According to Nation, Bett had been vomiting blood due to damage to some of his internal organs. He had previously been treated and discharged but was back in hospital after his condition worsened.

Athletics Kenya (AK) director in charge of youth and development Barnaba Korir, said he has been in touch with the family, the sister, Purity Kirui, confirming the news.

The body has been moved to Soin Sigowet sub-county hospital mortuary for preservation ahead of burial.

The 26-year-old Bett, who also won silver in 4x800m at the 2017 World Athletics Relay Championships, was banned for four years in 2018 for using performance-enhancing Erythropoietin.

He made a return to competition in 2022 competing in 400m hurdles at the Third AK Track and Field Meeting, finishing third. Bett has not competed since then.

News of his demise comes days after another former athlete, retired marathoner Samson Kandie, was brutally killed by unknown assailants on Thursday 3 October night at his home in the upscale Elgon View Estate in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
