Proper preparations proved the best recipe for good performance for Christine Nalimo and John Lomoni as they won the 10k races for the 2024 edition of the Iten International Marathon.
The two scooped top honours after clocking 31:58 and 28:18.07, respectively, in the race held on Sunday morning in Iten.
The 10k race, which served as a curtain raiser to the main event, started at Chelingwa Shopping Centre with the finish lane being held at Iten town.
Nalimo, while giving her post-race thoughts revealed that the win was nit by sheer luck as she spent four weeks on the course plotting for victory.
The 26-year old told Mozzart Sport that she would train hard on from the starting point to the finish under coach Ben Maiyo, who shared tips on balancing pace and energy.
"I had prepared well under my coach. I trained on the course in the last month. I would kick off my training from the starting point to the finish every day and I am happy it paid off," she said.
The Cherangany-born athlete said she would build on the win to clinch top honours in the Madrid 10k race set for 31 December.
" Winning here gives me hopes of getting gold in Spain next month, " said the athlete, who is also has her eyes on next year's Sirikwa Classic.
Mirriam Chebet and Ugandan Loice Chepkemoi finished second and third in the women's race after clocking 32:06 and 32:39 respectively.
Her script was similar to that of Lomon, who disclosed that he had been preparing for the race since April but a recurring knee injury forced him to intermittent breaks.
Running with heavy strappings on his knee, the 20-year-old said he had to bear the pain during the course, but his determination to be crowned champion pushed him to persevere.
"I had done my homework very well as I was conversant with the course. I had trained well although my sessions were largely disrupted by a knee injury. I have races lined up for me in France, but I am yet to decide whether I will do 10k or half marathon," he said.
He beat Erick Kiplagat and Paul Cherotich who finished second and third in 28:38.05 and 29:09.01 respectively.
