The two say they will fight for the tickets to the World Championships against the experienced Kenyans

World Under-20 1500m champion Reynold Cheruiyot clocked 3:32.01 to win against a deep 1500m field assembled for the fourth edition of the Kip Keino Classic held at the Kasarani Stadium on Saturday 13 May.

Fresh from delivering another gold for Kenya at the Africa Junior Championships held in Ndola, Zambia, Cheruiyot beat Abel Kipsang and Vincent Keter for the title

Speaking after the race, a visibly breathless Kipkor was excited about the win, saying that all the events he has been participating in this year resulted in the win.

“The secret is training. I train sprints 200m and 100m which helps me in speed. To the juniors coming to compete, be constant in training, and, welcome to the big boys’ club,” he urged.

Former World U-20 winner Keter came in third after a spirited final run.

“I am very happy. I credit my win to experience through the events I have been attending this year. The focus now shifts to the World Championships and the Diamond Leagues where I am aiming a podium finish,” Keter said.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi's unstoppable force

Former 800m Under 20 world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi successfully reclaimed the 800m title in the event held at Kasarani Stadium.

He was running his first competitive race since anchoring Team Kenya to win gold in mixed relays at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst, Australia in February.

Wanyonyi said he was using the event as a build-up for his Diamond League Series journey as well as the Rabat Meeting scheduled for May 28 in Rabat, Morocco.

He finished ahead of Wycliffe Kinyamal of who was second and Kenya’s Timothy Cheruiyot who came in third.

Janet Chemutso shines in 1500m

Ugandan-based athlete Janet Chemusto, who won a silver medal in the 1500m and a 3000m bronze at the Africa Youth Championship, is out to go a step better in Columbia.

The 2015 1500m Africa Youth Championship silver medalist was never challenged after she broke away from the field early in the race to build a lead of more than 50 meters before cruising home ahead of Melly Chepchichir of Kenya who was second in 4:04:56. Third place went to Hawi Abera Kumsa of Ethiopia who ran under 4:06:15.
