Kipyegon, who was making her second appearance at the event after triumphing in the 1500m last year, once again proved unstoppable as she cruised to victory in 4:17.78, the fastest mile ever run on U.S. soil.
The three-time Olympic champion pocketed $60,000 (Ksh7.7 million) in prize money for her win. Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay finished second in 4:19.75, while American Nikki Hiltz settled for third in 4:32.51.
Despite chilly conditions, Kipyegon produced a commanding performance to seal yet another memorable win.
"I just wanted to finish my season beautifully,” Kipyegon told LetsRun.com.
"I started my season some months ago, and I was really looking forward to ending it well. That’s exactly what I did. I just wanted to run, enjoy the race, and enjoy the atmosphere out there.”
The world 5000m silver medallist admitted the weather was tougher than last year, but was pleased with how she handled the race.
"Today was a little bit faster compared to last year. Last year was 1500m, this year was a mile, and last year’s race was more tactical,” she said.
“This time it was fast and a bit cold. After the finish line, I was coughing a lot,” she added, speaking to Citius Mag.
Kipyegon revealed that her main goal was to execute a clean race and end her stellar season on a high note.
The 31-year-old, who has won every major title in middle-distance running, said she is now looking forward to spending time with her family before resuming preparations for next season.
"We thank God we are finished with the season. This was my last starting line of the year,” she said with a smile.
The 1500m world record holder also expressed her appreciation for being invited back to Athlos, praising the event’s founder, Alexis Ohanian, for championing women’s sports and creating a unique atmosphere that combines athletics, entertainment, and fashion.
"It’s amazing there’s a lot happening in between these races. It’s not only athletics; it’s a mix of many things: music, entertainment, fashion. It’s so fun to be here,” she said.
Her win caps another remarkable year for the Kenyan superstar, who continues to redefine excellence in women’s middle-distance running.
