Ninth edition of Chemususu Dam Half Marathon attracts hundreds, efforts to conserve environment emphasized

Winners of the half marathon race pocketed Ksh. 250,000

Hundreds of athletes lined up for the ninth edition of the Mozzart Bet Chemususu Half Marathon race that was held on Saturday in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County. 

This year's edition, sponsored by the leading gaming firm to the tune of 3.5 million shillings aimed at giving athletes platform to compete and join hands in conserving environment especially water catchment areas. 

According to the records from the local organising committee, 104 athletes participated in the women's race with 47 men chasing for top honours. 

Children took part in the 2km race with hundreds testing themselves on the 5km corporate event that saw various corporate bosses also breaking sweat on the hilly course. 

Spectators were not left behind as well as they lined up on the course and to cheer the athletes with thousands finding space at the finishing point at Chemususu Primary School's grounds to have a glimpse of the champions.

At hand to flag off athletes at the starting point at Benonin was Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen who was flanked by Eldama Ravine Member of Parliament Musa Sirma and his Mogotio counterpart Reuben Kiborek

Murkomen was the chief guest and was later joined Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi and other leaders from the region who witnessed the athletes compete for medals and cash prizes. 

Mozzart Bet Country Manager Sasa Krneta, his assistant Bojan Korac Marketing Manager Frank Okoth and their colleagues from the corporate world joined Murkomen in seeing the athletes off. 

It was Catherine Reline and Anthony Kipchirchir who carried the day after winning the women's and men's half marathon races in 1:12:18 and 1:03:35 respectively. 

The Ravine Sub County staff emerged winners of the corporate run with Cynthia Chelimo and Dennis Sitianei being winners of the children's 2k races respectively. 

The Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya officials were on location to not only to test athletes but also spread the message of running clean. 

Winners of the half marathon pocketed Ksh. 250,000 with the runners up getting Ksh. 150,000. Bronze medalists took home one hundred thousand shillings.
