Controversial sprinter lowers Mark Otieno's record in Nigeria.
Industrious Kenyan sprinter Ferdinand Omanyala set a new Kenyan record in 100m in Lagos, Nigeria on Tuesday evening when he stopped the clock at 10.01 at the 3rd MoC Grand Prix.
Set at the Yaba College of Technology in the heart of Lagos the Kenyan obliterated Mark Otieno's 10.14 record set in 2015 and consequently imposed himself in the Tokyo-bound Team Kenya for the rescheduled Olympic Games.
He becomes the second African to qualify for the Tokyo Games 100m race after Benjamin Azamati of Nigeria booked his ticket at the Texas Relay.
Having missed out on the qualification mark during Kenya's second weekend meeting, the 24-year-old made the four-hour trip to Lagos chasing the coveted Olympic slot and not only did he do it in style but he affirmed his growing stature as a sprint supremo.
His new mark will be ratified after the necessary checks are completed both by the World Athletics and Athletics Kenya. Earlier in the year, Omanyala had lowered the Kenyan record in Nairobi but the mark could not be ratified owing to failure by Athletics Kenya to organize international level events with verifiable statistics.
The sprinter has also divided opinion in the past after testing positive for a banned substance, diprofase, and serving a fourteen-month ban from athletics.
