Kenya managed ten medals only, the least number since 2005 in Helsinki

Athletics Kenya has lauded Team Kenya's performance at the just concluded World Athletics Championships in Oregon, although a good number of Kenyans feel that the team did not deliver as expected.

Kenya finished fourth with ten medals behind USA, Ethiopia, and Jamaica who had 33, 10, and 10 respectively. Two of the medals for the Kenyan team were gold, five silver, and three bronze.

In a congratulatory message, AK noted that while there were some disappointing results, it was worth picking lessons from the disappointments to improve ahead.

"As the curtains come down in Oregon, Athletics Kenya congratulates all athletes in the contingent for a race well run. This championship has been one of the mixed fortunes in which on one hand— as a nation—we have shouted ourselves hoarse while celebrating our athletes’ feat on the track and field.

On the other hand, there are admittedly races in which we were all left heartbroken in the wake of disappointing results. Nonetheless, it is important to pick on the positives as motivation going forward while harnessing lessons from the disappointments," an excerpt from the congratulatory message read.

The body went on to heap praises on the young blood who have shone at the big stage against more experienced opponents, noting that investing in the youth development programs will always have good results.

"Indeed, the men’s 10,000m has been our Achilles heel for quite some time as our neighbors, Ethiopia and Uganda shared the crown between them. We applaud young Stanley Mburu for displaying maturity beyond his years to win silver in this race, against his more experienced opponents.

Mburu and newly crowned world 5000m silver medalist Beatrice Chebet are evidence that we can never go wrong with an investment in youth development programs. The duo is just but among many upcoming athletes who have emerged from AK’s conveyor belt initiative of identifying and nurturing talent countrywide," another part read.
