The athlete bagged the second gold for Team Kenya in Oregon.
After disappointments in the 2017 and 2019 editions of the World Athletics Championships, Emmanuel Korir has revealed that his experience handed him the edge to claim gold in the 800m at the Hayward Field, Oregon on Sunday morning.
Korir is a silver lining in an otherwise dark championships cloud as he mined the second gold for Kenya after the ever impressive Faith Kipyegon reclaimed her world title in the 1500m.
The US-based athlete noted that he drew lessons from the previous championships in London 2017 and 2019 Doha which came in handy this year to fire him to victory.
“I've failed many times since 2017 in the London World Championships, 2019 in Doha I doubled and messed up. I therefore knew what to do.
I know how to compete against the best athletes in this event and going forward to Birmingham we expected something, I'm planning to run for another 10 years which is enough time to get close to that record,” said Korir.
The 27-year-old posted a time of 1:43.71 as he surged forward with 400m to the line to finish ahead of Djamel Sedjati of Algeria and Marco Arop of Canada who won silver and bronze in 1:44.14 and 1:44.48 respectively.
Korir added that he preserved his energy for the final as he posted slower times in the heat and semis and was thankful for those who helped him through the journey.
“I'm happy with the achievement, we now have another gold medal and we appreciate everyone who has helped us get to this stage from the fans to the government.
I was the only one with a 1:45 time and everyone was tired after the heats and semis and running slower times in heats and semis gave me an advantage. I did my best which brought gold,” added Korir.
