She will get over Ksh 11million (100,000 dollars) in bonuses for setting a world record.

Twenty-two year old Sydney McLaughlin ran a race for the ages in the women's 400m/h final to break her own world record for the fourth time in her career.

Infront of a roaring hime crowd, McLaughlin obliterated her previous best with 50.68 to win her first world title in the event at the World Athletics Championships on Saturday 23 (EAT).

She lowered her previous time by an astonishing 0.73 seconds, becoming the first woman ever to run the distance in under 51 seconds with her 50.68 victory. In the last 13 months, she has broken 52 seconds and 51 seconds.

To let it into perspective, her wining time of 50.68s would have seen her place seventh in the final of the women's 400m flat that took place 35 minutes before her final.

Behind her was Netherlands’ Olympic bronze medallist Femke Bol who secured silver in 52.27, while USA’s former world record-holder Dalilah Muhammad clocked 53.13 for bronze.

Her first world recors came at the 2021 US Olympic Trials, when she clocked 51.90 to improve on the 52.16 global mark that Muhammad had set when winning the 2019 world title ahead of her compatriot.

Just over a month later, McLaughlin ran 51.46 to win the Olympic title in Tokyo, and she broke the record for a third time at this year’s US Championships in Eugene on 25 June, clocking 51.41.
