Paralympic: Kenya in pursuit of gold in action packed day

Asiya Sururu will take to Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium—Flatwater from 10:30 AM for the PR1 Women's Single Sculls, competing in heat 1.

Kenya will pursue gold today at the 2024 Paralympics in Paris, France, on a day that will see the country compete in three categories.

The 2024 Summer Paralympics, which began yesterday, will feature an increasing number of events as the days progress.

Yesterday, 22-year-old debutant Stency Neema Obonyo lost 3-12 to Egyptian Ali Moneem Salma in the Taekwondo K44-53 kg round of 16.

Captain Samuel Mushai, Julieta Moipo, and Asiya Sururu are the athletes who will represent the country tomorrow as the gold chase begins.

Captain Mushai will lead the charge at 11:06 AM when he competes in the finals of the men’s 5000m-T11 at Stade de France track.

Mushai will be competing against eight other athletes from different countries. Out of the nine, he is ranked 8th this season.

Mushai has a season-best of 15:35.59 and will compete against Brazilians Agripino Julio Cesar, a season-best of 14:57.70, and who has recorded 14:53.97. They are favorites for the race.


Asiya Sururu will take to Vaires-Sur-Marne Nautical Stadium—Flatwater from 10:30 AM for the PR1 Women's Single Sculls, competing in heat 1.

Sururu will be up against Samuel Moran of Israel, who holds the Paralympic best time of 10:33.34, set in Tokyo, in 2021.

World record holder Skarstein Birgit Lorise of Norway, with a time of 9:47.83, will be in heat 2. The winner in each heat will qualify for the final, while the remainder will go to the repechage.

Debutant Julieta Moipo will be competing in the Taekwondo Women’s K44 -57 kg against Serbia's Marija Micer in the round of 16 at the Grand Palais.

Marija, who finished 7th in Tokyo 2020, is now aiming for gold in Paris.

Her highlight is the silver medal she won at the 2019 World Championships in Antalya, Turkey.

The repechage will be at 6:00 PM, while the contest for gold medals will be at 11:00 PM.
