PB for Magdalyne Masai as Frankfurt course record is smashed

Reading Time: 2min | Mon. 28.10.24. | 09:21

It was the first time that two women ran below 2:20 in Frankfurt, with a large number of elite runners achieving PB's

Hawi Feysa ran a superb race to win the 41st Mainova Frankfurt Marathon with a superb 2:17:25 course record.

The 25-year-old Ethiopian improved the former women’s mark held by Kenya's Valerie Aiyabei since 2019 by 1:45.

Kenya's Magdalyne Masai, who competed with her sister Linet and husband Jake Robertson in the same marathon for the first time, ran a big personal best (PB) of 2:18:58 for second place, finishing inside the former course record of 2:19:10. Ethiopia’s Shuko Genemo completed the podium places in 2:22:37.

Catherine Cherotich was the second-best Kenyan, missing out on a podium place by five seconds as she clocked 2:22:42. Others in the top ten included Agnes Keino (2:22:53), who finished fifth, Linet (2:23:52) in seventh, Judith Kiyeng (2:24:41) in eighth and Betty Chepkwony (2:25:13) in ninth. The other top ten places were held by Ethiopians.

“The record was my goal and everything went perfectly. After 25 kilometres I had enough energy left to run away from the group. I was very happy with my race plan. The atmosphere along the course helped me a lot. You can certainly run 2:16 on this fast course,” Feysa reflected after the win. “I originally wanted to run at my own pace alone at the head of the field. However, the organizers planned that we ran together as a group until 25 kilometers. The tactic proved very good."

Five women went through halfway in 69:19, among them Feysa and the two sisters, Magdalyne and Linet. When Feysa increased the pace after 25 kilometres, only Magdalyne followed her. Until just before 40 km, Masai was still in contention with the gap a few seconds but she pulled away for victory.

While it was the first time that two women ran below 2:20 in Frankfurt a large number of elite runners achieved personal bests.
