Jepchirchir missed the World Athletics Championships due to the same injury

Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir will miss the upcoming New York City Marathon slated for November 6 after she withdrew due to an injury, missing a chance to defend her title.

According to Nation Sport, Jepchirchir opted against competing in the race she won last year as per the advice she received from her doctor together with her management on grounds that she is not ready enough owing to the hip injury.

The injury saw the Boston Marathon winner miss the World Athletics Championships in Oregon in July this year, and although she had resumed training it was not enough to see her take on the New York City Marathon title defense.

“I was on course with my training but I picked a muscle injury which came with a lot of pain and I couldn’t even seat well. I went to the hospital and I have been on the recovery path. The muscle is still painful that's why I decided to withdraw from the race because my programme was interrupted,” Jepchirchir said as quoted on Nation Sport.

She further went to reveal that she picked the injury upon resuming training after her victorious run in Boston.

“After competing and winning in Boston, I took a break and started my preparations towards the next event but I picked a hip injury forcing me to withdraw from the World Championships. I started training again for the New York Marathon but again I can’t compete,” she added.

In her absence, 2010 New York City Marathon champion Edna Kiplagat and last year’s runner-up Viola Cheptoo together with debutants Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi are expected to fly Kenya's flag high.
