The Standard Chartered Bank has signed a new five-year partnership deal with Athletics Kenya (AK) until 2027 to deliver the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon.

The partnership will have the athletics body assist with the efficient running and coordination of the Marathon.

Meanwhile, registration for this year’s edition slated for Sunday 29 October is open at a fee of Ksh. 2000 as organisers target to register 25,000 runners.

Just like last year, the race will be held at the Southern Bypass with Uhuru gardens as the marathon venue while the satellite marathons will be held from Sunday 22 and culminate on the marathon date.

The event will feature seven race categories; 42km male and female, 21km male and female, 21km wheelchair male and female, 10km male and female, 10 KM CEO challenge, 5km Family Fun Run race and the Corporate Relay Challenge.

Last year, Elias Kemboi and Sheila Chepkoech won the 42 Kilometers individual men and women categories in the 19th edition of the race.

Kemboi stunned a deep field to emerge victorious in the men's 42km after clocking 2:10:22 ahead of Wilfred Kirwa’s 2:10:50 and Felix Kipkorir’s 2:11:08 who came in second and third, respectively.

2017 Milano City Marathon champion, Chepkoech, on her part, clocked 2:27:04 to clinch the title ahead of Beatrice Cheptoo (2:28:42) and Skyline Jepkorir (2:29:36).

Daniel Ebenyo won in the men’s half marathon in 1:00:50 ahead of Isaiah Lasoi (1:01:23) and Samuel Naibei (1:01:31) while Evaline Chirchir clocked 1:09:58 to bag the women's Half Marathon ahead of Nelly Jeptoo and Edith Jepchumba who managed 1:10:40 and 1:11:03 respectively.

“Now in its 20th edition, the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has provided a stage for national and international athlete stardom. This has only been achieved through the support of our partners, key among them, Athletics Kenya.

Today, we are proud to extend our partnership with the athletics body and look forward to progressing our goal to deliver a collaborative, inclusive, sustainable, and premium marathon in the region,” Peter Gitau, Chairman, Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon Local Organizing Committee said.

Over the last 19 years, the Marathon has provided a platform for Kenya’s elite athletes to launch into international scenes. Renown marathoners like Dennis Kimetto, Irene Jerotich, Chemutai Rionotukei, Fridah Chepkite Lodepa, Elisha Kiprop and many others, have either launched or honed their marathon careers through this event.

AK has linked athletes to the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon since 2003, helping to launch athletic careers. Further, the association has helped to design the race specificities including timings, running tracks and athlete welfare checks.

AK president, Jackson Tuwei said the federation is proud to extend this partnership and to be a leading partner of the Marathon as the event has not only nurtured sporting talent but helped create a benchmark for inclusive and sustainable marathons in the region.
