The Dutch 32-year-old has won three of the five marathons she has contested so far: in London in 2023, when she triumphed on her debut over the distance; in Chicago later that year, when she ran 2:13:44 for the third-fastest time in history.

She also claimed victory at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, where she won gold in an Olympic record of 2:22:55 after earning bronze in both the 5000m and 10,000m.

In addition, she placed third in the London Marathon earlier this year and fourth in the Tokyo Marathon in 2024.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist is now looking forward to the challenge of racing in Sydney, which will also make its debut on the Abbott World Marathon Majors (WMM) calendar.

“I am really looking forward to racing another Major and experiencing the energy of the Sydney crowds,” said Hassan.

Australia is such a strong athletics nation, and a great marathon needs passionate and loud fans, so I am excited. I am also honoured to be part of the Sydney Marathon’s first year as a Major.”

She will be targeting the Sydney Marathon’s women’s course record of 2:21:41, set by Ethiopia’s Workenesh Edesa Gurmesa in 2024.

The Dutchwoman heads to the race carrying a marathon PB of 2:13:44, which makes her the third-fastest female marathoner of all time.

"From her extraordinary range on the track to her dominance on the roads, Sifan Hassan is a true global icon," says Wayne Larden, Sydney Marathon race director.

"Having an athlete of her calibre compete in Sydney is a dream for our event and for Australian fans. It will be thrilling to see her take on the streets of Sydney."

Joining Hassan in the elite field this year will be Kenyan marathon legend and two-time Olympic marathon champion Eliud Kipchoge, whose participation in the 2025 Sydney Marathon was revealed in March.

The 2025 edition of the Sydney Marathon was officially announced as the seventh Abbot World Marathon Majors (AWMM) race, the first in Oceania, last November.
