The Satellite Runs are in preparation of the 19th edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon which is set for the 30 October 2022.

Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon on Sunday 23 October hosted the Coast Satellite run at the Treasury Square Roundabout in Mombasa County.

The race was flagged off by Chief Guest, Governor Mombasa County Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir

Over 200 runners drawn from running clubs, corporates and the Persons with Disabilities(PWDs) community participated in the event which featured 5km and 10km runs.

The Governor then led participants in tree planting at the County Garden. The marathon targets to plant at least 25,000 trees through the slogan of ‘a tree per runner’.

“It is our ambition to ensure that our marathons are open and inclusive. In doing this, they stimulate community engagement, civic engagement and local economic development.

We have therefore created satellite runs such as this one to provide runners across Kenya with an opportunity to participate in the marathon," Local Organising Committee chairman, Peter Gitau said.

The Coast Satellite Run is first among satellite races with Kisumu's event scheduled for 28 October and Kakamega set for 29 October.

In recognition of the prevailing economic times, the marathon has capped the registration fee at Ksh 2,000 and extended registration period to 28 October.

This year’s marathon will feature different race categories namely: 10km, 21km, 21km Wheelchair Race, 42km and the 42km Corporate Relay.

All marathon proceeds go towards the FutureMakers Initiative. We are working with disadvantaged young people, especially girls and the visually impaired, to gain new skills and expertise to improve their chances of getting a job or starting their own business
