The marathon will see elite athletes such as Brigid Kosgei and Geoffrey Kirui take part in the 21km race

The Nakuru City Marathon will now be known as The Stanbic Nakuru City Marathon.

This is after Stanbic Bank Kenya followed up on their commitment to be the title sponsor of the 21km race by contributing Ksh. 10 million towards the marathon as they signed an agreement with the County Government of Nakuru on Friday 19 November 2021 to successfully acquire the naming rights of the event.

The marathon, which is set to take place on November 28th, 2021, targets 3,000 participants including 200 elite runners, has been split into three categories; 21km, 10km and 5km.

World Marathon record holder, Brigid Kosgei who is also the bank’s Brand Ambassador, 1500m Olympic and World champion & World Marathon and Boston Marathon champion, Geoffrey Kipkorir Kirui have already confirmed their participation in the event where elite marathoners will have their own race.

Speaking during the event, Nakuru County Deputy Governor, H.E. Dr.Eric Korir expressed his appreciation to the bank, saying their sponsorship and participation in the race is a big boost to the event.

“As a County, we are keen on promoting talent in athletics and this marathon will act as a training ground for a good number of amateur athletes, in the process enabling us to deliver on our mission. We are therefore confident that our efforts will bear fruit, and position Nakuru as the nerve center of not only athletics but sports talent,” the Governor added.

The Stanbic Bank Chief Executive, Mr. Charles Mudiwa noted that sports, which is as old as humanity, has continued to contribute towards fit and healthy societies.

“Having consistently sponsored sporting activities in Kenya, Stanbic Bank has seen the positive impact the Sports industry has had on our communities and economy. This is a sector we are determined to continue making contributions to in our efforts to grow our economy and also build talent among our youthful population,” Mr. Mudiwa said.

The winners (both men and women) in the 21km race will be awarded Ksh 500,000 while those in the 10km category (both men and women) will walk away with Ksh 100,000. In addition to this, all winners of the race will be taken through a Financial Fitness and Literacy programme championed by Stanbic Bank Kenya.

In support towards the sports industry, Nakuru County is putting up Keringet Sports Academy, a multi-million shillings facility. It is also upgrading Afraha Stadium.

Registration for the marathon kicked off on November 9th, 2021 and is currently on-going.
