Four suspects have been arrested in the running counties of Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet in connection with administering prohibited substances to Kenyan athletes.

Over the weekend, the Multi-Agency enforcement team led by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (ADAK), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), together with the Pharmacy and Poison Board inspectors raided two premises suspected to be promoting doping.

In a statement released by ADAK, the pharmacy is used for unlawful purposes such as storage and administering prohibited substances with the intent of doping.

“The pharmacy by the name KAPSABET RIVERVIEW PHARMACY is located within Kapsabet town, a search was conducted on the premises and it was discovered that the three suspects were operating a Clinic without a license, without medical records, using Kapsabet County Government lettershead and other documents.

Also, the certificate of registration is questionable. The three suspects were booked documentation and later released on a cash bail of Ksh 20,000 each to give the Multi-Agency investigating team time to verify the documents, licenses, and health officers' certificates so that they may prefer the right charges against the three accused persons,” read the statement.

In Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County, the same team raided a chemist by the name KIRECH PHARMACY which is within Iten township, and found one pharmtech by the name James Cheruiyot Kipsainai administering suspected prohibited substances to an athlete by the name Koech Aden Kipkosgei.

“Samples of blood and urine were collected from the athlete, scene documented, the pharmacist taken and booked at Iten Police Station for the offense of unlawfully administering prohibited substances to an athlete c/sec 42(4)(b) of the Anti Doping Act and further interrogation while the athlete will face rule violation as per Sec 42(6) of the Anti Doping Act. Also, the Pharmacy was closed by Pharmacy and Poison Board as per their Act,” read part of the statement.

Following the two instances, the Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has hailed the team for the breakthrough saying that the fight has to go on and should not be a media show in arresting the suspects.

“The multi-agency has shown that it is possible to end the menace and have zero recordings in terms of doping in the next few months,” the Sports boss said
