Police have opened investigations to ascertain cause of death

One of the most synonymous names with Cross Country racing in Kenya Hosea Mwok Macharinyaang’ was found dead on Sunday in a case suspected to be suicide.

The 35 year-old athlete who represented Kenya multiple times in the World Cross Country championships winning team titles twice is sad to have been undergoing mental struggles prior to his untimely demise.

Macharinyaang’ was found dead in his house in Murkwiji, West Pokot County. Police in the county have commenced investigations to ascertain the cause of death.

Macharinyaang’ has been a constant figure in local Cross Country circuit for the past decade and half, making Team Kenya on several occasions.

Despite not claiming titles and records his longevity and consistency endeared him to fellow athletes, administrators of the sport and the press.

He was always there running and competing with the best. Although he did not leave a record or win many remarkable races he was always doing his best. This occurrence has truly shocked the athletics community,” said Athletics Kenya official Jackson Pkemoi

Macharinyaang’ ventured into road running in the last five years but was also in the tracks running the men’s 5000m and 10000m.

He had been missing from the Cross Country trail but is said to have restarted training for a possible comeback at the age of 35.

His coach Boniface Tiren said Macharingaang’ had started training hoping to gain sharpness and carry on with his athletics.

“A month ago I met him in Iten where he was training and I sought to know where he had been. He promised to find time and explain to me what he has been doing. It is saddening that he has passed on,” said experienced athletics coach Boniface Tiren
