Olympic and world champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi was edged out by American teenage sensation Cooper Lutkenhaus in a thrilling men’s 800m race at the Oslo Diamond League on Wednesday, 10 June.
The highly-anticipated showdown lived up to expectations as Wanyonyi, Lutkenhaus and Canada’s Marco Arop renewed their battle for middle-distance supremacy at the historic Bislett Stadium.

Wanyonyi got off to a strong start, taking command of the race in the opening stages with Lutkenhaus tracking him closely in second place.
Behind them, former world champion Arop found himself locked in a battle with Belgium’s Eliott Crestan as the field settled into position.
As the pace intensified over the final lap, the race developed into the duel many had predicted between Wanyonyi and the unbeaten American teenager.
The Kenyan briefly looked set to extend his dominance when he surged to the front entering the home straight, but Lutkenhaus responded brilliantly.
The 17-year-old produced a devastating finishing kick to sweep past the Olympic champion before racing clear to victory in a world-leading 1:42.08.
Despite stumbling and falling after crossing the finish line, Lutkenhaus had already done enough to secure the biggest victory of his young career.
Wanyonyi crossed the line just one hundredth of a second behind in a season’s best 1:42.09, while Arop completed the podium in 1:43.33.
The result marked another milestone in what has been a remarkable breakthrough season for Lutkenhaus.
The American arrived in Oslo unbeaten in five 800m finals in 2026, having already claimed World Indoor gold, set a world U20 indoor record and won on his Diamond League debut in Stockholm.
His latest triumph further strengthens his growing reputation as one of the sport’s brightest talents and potentially the next dominant force in the men’s 800m.
For Wanyonyi, the defeat came just days after he revealed he had become a father for the first time.
The Kenyan had skipped the Stockholm Diamond League to return home following the birth of his child and was hoping to celebrate the milestone with victory in Oslo.
The race had also been billed as another chapter in Wanyonyi’s rivalry with Arop, whose battles with the Kenyan have produced some of the most memorable 800m contests in recent years, including their dramatic Olympic final in Paris where Wanyonyi won gold by just one hundredth of a second.
However, on this occasion, both established stars found themselves overshadowed by the fearless teenager from Texas.
Lutkenhaus had already defeated Arop in Stockholm, but overcoming the reigning Olympic and world champion represented an even bigger statement.
The victory confirmed that the teenager is no longer merely a rising star but a genuine contender on the global stage.
