13th June: International day of mouthwatering WC headers

On this day in 2002 and 2014, Jared Borgetti and Robin van Persie scored two breathtaking goals that opposed the laws of physics

For a split second, I remember saying out loud, 'what on Earth' as a couple of us friends were watching Robin van Persie diving into the Brazilian air as if it was a swimming pool in front of him. The very next moment, there he was, flying and subsequently hitting the ball with his head to stun Iker Casillas, the entire Spanish team, thousands of fans at the stadium, and billions of us around the world.

RVP's jaw-dropping equaliser is not only a work of art, but this goal - scored exactly eight years ago - remains one of those emblematic World Cup moments that will be remembered forever for its brilliance.

However, a charming coincidence made sure this is not the only sensational WC header scored at the WC. Twelve years prior, during the 2022 WC, Mexican striker Jared Borgetti netted from maybe an even more difficult situation. It was also a group-stage game against mighty Italy, and Borgetti managed to launch it straight into the back of the net despite moving away from Buffon's post and with none other than notorious Paolo Maldini on his back.

Ladies and gentlemen, we could agree upon establishing the International day of mouthwatering WC headers. And this date, 13th June, should definitely be celebrated as the one.
