Kenya, alongside Tanzania and Uganda won the bid to co-host the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 AFCON and thereafter embarked on a plan to renovate and build stadiums for the same.
The government upgraded the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium for use in CAF while Talanta Sports City is earmarked to join the two in hosting the 2027 AFCON.
The construction of Talanta Stadium began in March 2024 in a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto with the renowned China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) taking charge of the project.
At inception, the design had captured both engineering masterpiece and aesthetics in what is considered as the most modern stadium in the East and Central Africa region upon completion.
The roofing was oval-shaped and curved all the way to the floor with open latticework sections at either end to allow for natural lighting and ventilation.
Proposed look of Talanta StadiumWith the additional structures from the roof, the first design was expected to be slightly costly than the final design, especially in roofing.
Additionally, in the initial design, there was little to report on on the walls which were largely covered by the roofing curves.
Proposed look of Talanta Stadium's roofThe new design has taken a look that mirrors the traditional ellipse stadium format, which had its walls decorated by Kenyan Shield motifs.
Proposed look of Talanta StadiumWhile the new design does not look like the previous one, it will still be eye-catching with its ground level structure leading to the 1,000 capacity car parking and the two adjacent training grounds.
The construction of the Ksh44 billion facility is currently at the roofing level with contractors working day and night to ensure it is complete by 31 December.
