The quest for a place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) intensifies as African giants Nigeria take on Mozambique in a highly anticipated clash today, Monday, 5 January, at the Complexe Sportif de Fes from 22:00 hrs.

Nigeria qualified for the round of 16 after topping Group C with a 100 percent record, securing a 2-1 win over Tanzania, a 3-2 victory over Tunisia, and a 3-1 triumph against Uganda.

Mozambique, on the other hand, qualified as the best third placed team, finishing third in Group F with three points.

Based on their group stage performances, Nigeria, the highest scoring side, are favourites and are on a mission to clinch the AFCON title to ease the disappointment of missing out on 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification.

This Monday evening clash will be only the second time the two sides meet at the AFCON finals, their previous encounter dating back to the final group match of the 2010 edition, which saw the Super Eagles win 3-0.

Overall, the nations have met five times, with Nigeria dominating the fixture with four wins and a draw.

Nigeria have extensive experience at this stage, having played in the knockout phase 17 times, while Mozambique will be competing in their first knockout match in six attempts.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle has faced criticism from sports journalists after locking them out of the team’s training sessions for three days. The matter dominated his pre-match press conference, where he defended the decision.

“The rules for this tournament allow one session for journalists. Out of respect for this country, I agreed with my media officer before AFCON to give Nigerian journalists a second training session per week. So it means two sessions per week,” said Chelle.

The Malian explained that the decision was meant to protect his team and ensure they remain focused.

“For me, it is a good deal. But we are not on holiday. I have to take care of my players. I want them to stay focused. This is not against you; it is to protect my players.”

Mozambique head coach Chiquinho Conde expressed confidence in his side’s ability to challenge Nigeria.

“We have shown that we have a strong and competent team. Against Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon, we missed out on the details, but now it is kill or be killed. Nigeria are favourites, but we will approach the game with humility, composure, and responsibility. We have come to this stage with respect, and now we will show what we can do,” said Conde.
