Thanks to La Roja's lackluster performance and the fantastic 40-year-old keeper Vozinha, the Blue Sharks pulled off the biggest upset at the World Cup so far - 0-0

Surprise! Upset! Shock!

Cabo Verde have pulled off the biggest upset at the 2026 World Cup so far, as they won a heroic point against Spain, salvaging a goalless draw against the reigning European champions! The African heart and the fortress that the manager Bubista and his men built in front of their goal held firm, stopping one of the most lethal attacks in today’s football!

Cabo Verde were focused solely on defence, but the game against La Roja isn’t the one where they could chase a triumph. It was the game where even a point was like a victory.

Spain, on the other hand, was lackluster and subpar. The last five minutes before the break were the most challenging for the Blue Sharks, as Ferran Torres hit the bar and Aymeric Laporte had a massive opportunity, but the 40-year-old keeper Vozinha denied all the shots towards his goal, coming for crosses and bringing stability to his back line.

And in the end, Cabo Verde made it! A point against the giants, a point for history! A dream of advancing to the knockout phase is alive!

For almost 40 minutes, Spain didn't demonstrate a single hint that they were reigning European champions and one of the main favourites to win the World Cup.

Their game lacked ideas and creativity, as the sturdy defence of Cabo Verde and their strong approach neutralized La Roja's offensive power.

However, in the final minutes of the opening half, the Blue Sharks' keeper Vozinha was forced to keep his team's head above water.

In the 39th minute, Ferran Torres hit the bar from close range. Mikel Oyarzabal headed the rebound towards the net, but the 40-year-old custodian stepped up.

Still, that wasn't the end of the challenges coming towards him, as he superbly denied attempts of Torres in the 45th minute and Aymeric Laporte two minutes later, keeping Cabo Verde level with the European giants at the break.

After 25 minutes of no improvement in the second half, Luis de la Fuente had to resort to his strongest - though not fit enough - weapon, and sub on Lamine Yamal, causing ecstasy among the crowd at the packed Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Alongside the Barcelona forward, Mikel Merino came off the bench and had a decent chance minutes upon stepping on the pitch. Still, Spain were still in a desperate pursuit of an opener with a quarter of an hour to go.

At that point, it seemed impossible for the ball to even reach the Cabo Verde keeper Vozinha, as his teammates had practically formed a wall in front of him, blocking every rivals' attempt.

And the fortress held firm! Spain failed to break the sturdy Blue Sharks, who have won a historic point! After the referee's final whistle, many of the Cabo Verde players and fans were in tears. That's how much this success meant to them. Now, a dream of advancing to the knockout phase is alive. It's time to write history.
