The Amsterdaamers sent 30 shots at the opponent's goal, 10 of which hit the frame, but they broke the opponent's defense only in the 57th minute - 2-0
It wasn't great to watch from the Ajax fans' point of view, even though their team attacked for 90 minutes, but in the end, it ended the way the entire Johan Cruyff Arena wanted. The Amsterdaamers defeated Volendam in a relegation zone battle and finally got out of the danger zone - 2-0 (0-0).
John van 't Schip's team sent as many as 30 shots at the opponent's goal, of which as many as 10 went into the frame, but they struggled for the entire 57 minutes to finally take the lead, and then another half hour to definitively resolve any dilemma on the winner.
The first goal came under the direction of Steven Bergwijn, who reacted well after a pass from Brobbey, came in from the left and set the ball on the right, and then followed a strong shot at the crossbar of the powerless Backhaus.
The second goal was scored in the 89th minute, when Steven Berghuis took a corner well, and Chuba Akpom sent the ball into the net with a header.
It is clear that everything could have been resolved much earlier. In the first half, Ajax threatened dangerously through Berghuis, Bergwijn and Brobbey, while at the start of the second half, Bergwijn missed a great chance to change the result.
A great chance for Volendam in the 71st minute could have changed a lot. Robert Muhren ran alone in front of the opponent's goal, but adjusted himself on his left leg, which left him without strength to finish the play properly. Diant Ramaj got into his shot and managed to save the shot, which could have seriously ruined Ajax's plans.
After that, the home team continued to attack and finally solved the question of the winner at the very end of the match. Chuba Akpom had an excellent chance to score once again in stoppage time, but he failed.
Ajax now have only one game less than the competition, and this was only their second league victory. He achieved the first at the start of the season, against Heracles on August 12 (4-1).
John van 't Schip's team now faces a match with Heerenveen in Amsterdam, and then a Europa League clash with Brighton at the same venue.
