All Greek to the Gunners: Arsenal sign offensive powerhouse from Belgium

The Premier League champions have completed their first major move of the June Transfer Window.

After signing Piero Hincapie on a permanent deal from Bayer Leverkusen and bringing in free-agent backup goalkeeper Illan Meslier, Arsenal have announced the signing of Christos Tzolis, who signed a five-year contract, joining from Club Brugge for €40 million, which makes him the most expensive Greek player ever and the largest sale in Belgian football history.

Judging by last season's numbers, Arsenal appear to have signed a genuine attacking powerhouse and a constant threat to opposition defences, as the Greek international had as many as 51 goal contributions in all competitions last season - 22 goals and 29 assists.

His attacking versatility and ability to finish with either foot will add a new dimension to Mikel Arteta's squad.

Arteta's pattern: Never-ending hunt for goalkeepers

It's worth noting that he has Premier League experience, as he played for Norwich City in the 2021/22 season, when the Canaries finished bottom of the league.

Tzolis' natural position is on the left wing - though he is comfortable across the front line - where he is expected to replace Leandro Trossard, who has recently joined Besiktas.

Still only 24, the Greek's best years are ahead of him, and in London they hope he will fulfil the enormous potential they believe he possesses.

Aside from Club Brugge and Norwich, Tzolis played for PAOK, Twente, and Fortuna Dusseldorf during his career, and has made 34 appearances for the Greece national team.

He becomes the fourth player from this South European country at Arsenal, after Stathis Tavlaridis, Konstantinos Mavropanos, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and will wear No. 17 at the Emirates Stadium.
