Amorim: "I change the channel when they talk about Man United — to stay healthy"

The Portuguese was honest when talking about the criticism he faces, both on television and on social media
Ruben Amorim has many opponents. Manchester United’s big rivals are Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea — but his biggest rival is the television. And social media.
The holidays are over, January has arrived, Manchester United lost to Brighton, and the Portuguese’s eyes were filled with tears. Nearly a year ago, in a fit of rage inside the Old Trafford dressing room, he smashed a television screen.
That was his way of trying to relieve stress. Not much has changed since then. It’s unknown whether he has broken another one in the meantime, but it was then that he clearly realized it would be better for his health to avoid that device — at least whenever programs come on that analyze football and bring in expert pundits.
Whenever Manchester United are mentioned, he changes the channel.
“It’s normal in any profession to be exposed to that. I don’t read it, that’s how I protect myself. I don’t watch TV — I switch channels when they start talking about Manchester United. Not because I disagree with what’s being said, I often do agree, but this is my way of staying healthy,” said Ruben Amorim. He also spoke about the abuse on social media…

“As a coach, the feeling I get myself is enough — I don’t need others to tell me. I see it as the only way to protect myself. Of course, I lose sponsorship money on Instagram, but protecting myself and my family, and living a normal life, isn’t worth just a few pounds,” the Manchester United manager added. “I protect myself, and no one is tougher on me than I am when we lose or when we don’t play well. Today it’s normal for this kind of abuse to happen, so this is the only way to survive.”
Maybe he really doesn’t follow what’s being said and written, maybe he just says so — but clearly a lot of what appears on the online sky bothers him. And that, he can fix on his own, just like any coach for whom such things are a thorn in the eye. Better play, better results — and everyone will fall silent.
