The Everton coach Carlo Ancelotti said he thought the Super League proposal was a “joke” before it was made official and criticised the clubs involved in trying to rid the game of competition. But at the same time the Italian calls for improvements in English and European football.
He also wants the Premier League to improve and become more competitive so has proposed a salary cap to give smaller clubs a fighting chance against the big boys.

“In the Premier League, you have to have the weak teams, stronger. That's it. Give more power to the weak teams. I don't know how but I think this is the way. The teams that are at the bottom of the table or at No 10, No 11, No 9, they have to be stronger to be more competitive for the top of the table.
“I am not a politician to talk about this but there are a lot of instruments that you can use. One, for example, is a salary cap that could be used to improve the competition. The salary caps means less money for the manager, means less money for the players.
“But to try to equalise, a little bit, the competition I think it can be an idea," points out Ancelotti.
Everton visit one of the Super League's founding members Arsenal tonight (22.00) looking to bolster their own chances of playing in Europe next season. But Ancelotti never believed the controversial competition would get off the ground.
“My immediate reaction was they are joking, this is a joke! It's a joke because it's not going to happen. It's impossible. Sport culture in Europe is different to American sports. Not because we are right and they are wrong, but because the culture of the people is different. In America, in the USA, sport is different. Sport is entertainment. In Europe, we live with more passion. When we grow up, we want to beat our neighbours. We grew up differently," concluded he.
