The FKF Premier League debutants have been forced to host their home matches in Kericho and Gusii this season after the club’s former home venue, IAAF Bomet Stadium, was declared unfit to stage top-flight matches following their promotion.

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi led the groundbreaking ceremony alongside Defence PS Patrick Mariru and Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok during the official site handover for the stadium project that will be undertaken by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

The Ksh950 million facility is expected to be completed within nine months, a timeline that could allow APS Bomet to host part of their second-leg fixtures next season at the new stadium if construction stays on schedule.

“Today’s groundbreaking of the 10,000-seater Kipchamba Stadium in Bomet County marks yet another monumental leap towards accelerating the growth of sports and talent development in Kenya,” said PS Mwangi.

The stadium will feature a standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track, a VIP pavilion and modern changing rooms, among other amenities aimed at enabling the venue to host international sporting events.

“This stadium will be a catalyst for sports development and talent identification initiatives for thousands of youths in the region,” Mwangi added.

The development comes as a major boost for APS Bomet both on and off the pitch as the club continues its battle to avoid relegation in its debut top-flight campaign.

The club also received a morale boost on Wednesday after patron, and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, rewarded each player and member of the technical bench with a Ksh50,000 bonus following their victory over KCB FC. Murkomen also pledged similar bonuses for every win in the club’s remaining four league matches.

Other leaders present during the groundbreaking ceremony included Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, Bomet Senator Hillary Sigei and Chepalungu MP Victor Koech, among others.
