The Spaniard doesn't care that the FA announced future touchline bans for referee criticism
It’s been three weeks since Arsenal lost their first game of the season at Newcastle, which left coach Mikel Arteta fuming, mainly do the to controversial goal given to the Magpies, which turned out to be the winning one. After this infamous rant, the Spanish tactician was rightfully criticized for his behavior, since all other clubs already lost at least one game (City 2, Tottenham 2) and didn’t protested as much as he. FA responded with a charge against Arteta for things said at that conference. Then the FA informed Premier League and EFL managers that in the future, they will face touchline bans and that the clubs will be given bigger fines as part of preventing further referee criticism and abuse.
But, instead of looking back on his actions after Newcastle game, Arsenal boss decided to be firm (and stubborn).
“I am going to speak in the future. I think you have to be yourself and as a leader you have to be authentic. You cannot be someone you are not and this is who I am. We have sent our observations to the FA and we will try to give our point and the reasons why and there’s not a lot I can comment on. When you get asked to give your observation you have to do it in the right way and there’s a process in place to do that” said Arteta ahead of Brentford game.
In the past, there were managers who admitted stepping over the line and apologized (Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino), but Arteta is not that kind of person. It is likely that his behavior will be monitored closely in the future, as well as Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, who said that he doesn’t like 80% of English referees. Still, Gunners boss understand that (normal) communication is the key.
“It is good that we are communicating and we all want to improve the game. Referees, managers, officials, sporting directors, journalists, we all want a better game. To get a better game we need freedom of speech, respectfully and in a constructive way but we have to promote that. It is good that they are talking in front of the media about decisions because it brings clarity” said Arteta.
