Rayo Vallecano, a tiny Madrid-based side, are the only La Liga representative in the ultimate phases of three major European competitions

When giants fall, only the smallest can save the world, and La Liga's dignity.

Eight Spanish teams entered three major European competitions in 2025/26, but they've had a disappointing campaign.

Barcelona, Real Madrid, and, finally, Atletico Madrid were eliminated from the Champions League in the knockout stages - thus joining Villarreal, which ended their dreadful journey after the opening league phase.

Athletic Bilbao, Real Betis, and Celta failed to reach the Europa League semifinals. The Magnificent Eight have turned into one last survivor - tiny Rayo Vallecano.

A team from the Puente Vallecas district of Madrid, an actual dwarf compared to Atleti or Los Blancos, is the last one standing and fighting for the pride of Spanish football. The club that celebrated its centenary two years ago is fighting with Strasbourg in the Conference League semi-final, as they're on the verge of reaching the final following a 1-0 home win in the first leg at Vallecas Stadium last week.

Interestingly, even the renowned Marca acknowledged the importance of Rayo's crucial battle on Thursday night against their Ligue 1 counterparts.

"All of Spain is with Rayo today," reads Spain's most popular sports daily, emphasising this could be Rayo's first European final ever.

Club president Raul Martin Presa spoke proudly about the team before the massive match:

"We are very proud to be here. We're a team built on hard work, sacrifice, enthusiasm, and effort. Today will test our endurance. We must go out and win."

Rayo's family spirit showed in their trip to Strasbourg: they flew with fans, relatives, and journalists - about 180 people in total - for the semi-final.

The entire district has around 250,000 inhabitants, but we're pretty sure the majority of Spain will be with them tonight. Rayo Vallecano are, quite unexpectedly, their last saviours.
