Barcelona to play Liverpool in Kenya?

Reading Time: 3min | Fri. 01.05.26. | 10:35

The proposal is on the table and the Barca executives are to discuss the idea

It’s not April’s fool day, it’s a genuine information – the people of Kenya might have a chance to see the famous Barcelona in Nairobi in a few months! The Spanish media, led by a reliable Mundo Deportivo reported that the Catalans will be stationed at St. George's Park, near Birmingham in England during their pre-season tour. The camp is expected to begin at the end of July and last approximately two weeks and this year, there will be no tours during the pre-season due to the World Cup as most of the team’s star players won’t be available. But friendly games will be held and one venue is particularly interesting – Nairobi Kenya!

The FC Barcelona board of directors held a regular meeting this Thursday to discuss the first team's preseason. According to Mundo Deportivo, they discussed a proposal to play two friendly matches: one in Kenya (possibly in Nairobi) and another in Morocco, an offer which was talked about months ago, but is now current. The idea that the Catalans could play in Kenya is fantastic enough, but there is more to it – their opponent could be the famous Liverpool, while a potential match in Morocco would be played with a local team as an opponent. If this scenario is adopted, a possible date for this fixture would be August 8th. Both games would be played after Barcelona completes their pre-season tour in England, where one or two friendly games could be played as well. The two teams have not met since Barca’s 4-0 loss to the Reds at Anfield in the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg back in 2019 when footballers like Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez played.

Off course, the debate about this propositions is about to take place and nothing is confirmed yet. On one hand, the coaching staff led by Flick favors preparation in a nearby environment, with the intention of avoiding long journeys and ensuring facilities that offer the best conditions for physical work. But, the international promotion of club and a chance for additional revenue is always an important option, especially for a financial unstable club like Barcelona. So, Kenyan football fans can only brace themselves and hope that such a big club could eventually visit the county and organize a spectacle.
