Bayern break record in a 5-0 rout of St. Pauli

The Bavarians made a good prelude to the Real Madrid rematch on Wednesday

All of Germany knew it would happen on this game day. That the Bundesliga would get a new record, that an achievement more than half a century old would go down in history. And so it did. Bayern used Matchday 29 and their trip to St. Pauli (0–5) to salute an old, mighty generation and elevate a new, dominant one that could become timeless. The Bavarians of Udo Lattek, featuring Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller, Uli Hoeness and Paul Breitner, scored 101 goals in the 1971/72 Bundesliga season. That number had remained untouchable—until now. Vincent Kompany has turned Bayern into the most powerful attacking force in Europe. This new Bayern has surpassed the old guard and now sits on 105 league goals with five matches still to play. Who knows where they’ll stop?

For context, the 1971/72 season also had 34 matches, just like today. Nearly ten percent of Bayern’s goals back then came in the famous 11–1 demolition of Borussia Dortmund, when Gerd Muller scored four. That was also the season of Muller’s 40-goal record, which stood until 2021 when Robert Lewandowski broke it with 41. As for individual records, Harry Kane—who stayed on the bench in Hamburg—would need 10 goals in the final five matches to equal Lewandowski’s mark, and 11 to surpass it. With 31 goals so far, that seems unlikely. But the spotlight right now is on Bayern as a team.

Lattek’s Bayern conquered Germany 54 years ago, and Kompany’s side is set to do the same. In just his second season in charge, the Belgian is leading the club to another title. Of course, it’s too early to compare him with the legendary Lattek, who won six league titles, three cups, and the European Cup in 1974 across two spells. But if Kompany were to win the Champions League, he would join an elite group of Bayern managers who conquered Europe, alongside Lattek, Dettmar Cramer, Ottmar Hitzfeld, Jupp Heynckes and Hansi Flick. Only then could we start talking about a dynasty at the Allianz Arena.

As for the match, Bayern needed just nine minutes to break down a team destined to fight for survival until the final round. Jamal Musiala opened the scoring just a day after being criticized by Oliver Kahn. It wasn’t harsh criticism, more an assessment of his current situation. There has been ongoing discussion about Musiala’s struggles to return to his best form after a serious injury. Kahn even suggested he should consider skipping the World Cup to fully focus on his recovery for the 2026/27 season. Even today, Musiala didn’t look like his usual magical self—he struggled with his touch and hit the post from a clear chance. But with a headed goal and an assist for Nicolas Jackson, he showed his determination to return to top form and once again become a player feared by elite opponents.

Bayern controlled the first half with a single goal lead, then unleashed their usual barrage in the second. Within about 100 seconds, Leon Goretzka and Michael Olise knocked out St. Pauli. Jackson made it 4–0 midway through the second half, and Raphael Guerreiro sealed the 5–0 win in the 89th minute. Kompany chose not to risk Kane and, aside from Joshua Kimmich, Olise, Konrad Laimer and Manuel Neuer, started with several backup players. Even so, it was more than enough for a goal fest in northern Germany and a five-goal display that crowned a record-breaking night.
