Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has seemingly poured cold water on suggestions that he could be set for a dream move to Kaizer Chiefs, insisting that his focus remains firmly on the Kenya national team despite growing speculations linking him with the Soweto giants.

McCarthy has widely been viewed as one of the leading candidates for the vacant Amakhosi job following the departure of co-coaches Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef after a difficult 2025/26 campaign.
Many Kaizer Chiefs supporters have openly backed the South African legend to take charge, with his name consistently mentioned alongside experienced tacticians Pitso Mosimane and Manqoba Mngqithi.
But despite previously admitting that coaching the Chiefs is one of his career dreams, McCarthy has now distanced himself from the ongoing speculations.
Speaking to Kick Off Magazine, the former Manchester United forwards' coach stressed that his responsibility lies with Harambee Stars as he continues preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations that is set to be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
“For me, my duty is Kenya at the moment because that’s where I have a contract, that’s the team that I coach,” said McCarthy.
The former Bafana Bafana striker added that Chiefs’ coaching issues are not something he is concerned about at this stage.
“Chiefs have their own problems, and once they find solutions to solve those problems, they will,” he said.
McCarthy also insisted that he currently views the situation purely as an outsider.
“As long as it doesn’t concern me, it’s got nothing to do with me. I’m like a fan from the outside,” he added.
“But yeah, if it comes to my doorstep, then I will have to deal with it. But for now, it’s nothing to do with me.”
His remarks come despite earlier comments where he openly revealed that coaching Kaizer Chiefs would be a dream come true.
“I want to be the head coach of Man United,” McCarthy previously said.
“And in South Africa, I’ve always been a Kaizer Chiefs supporter. I want to coach the two clubs that I grew up supporting. So Man United and Kaizer Chiefs.”
