Mugheni and Owiti are set to be sidelined for months following knee injuries

AFC Leopards have been handed a huge setback in their continental pursuits after two of their players, Fabrice Mugheni and Jaffari Owiti, have been ruled out of action for months following nasty knee injuries.

Mugheni, who plays in the defensive midfield position picked up the knee injury just minutes after coming on at half time in Ingwe’s 4-2 comeback win against Bungoma Superstars in the Football Kenya Federation Cup round of 16.

Owiti on the other hand went off moments after he had come on for winger Harrison Mwendwa during the 1-0 win over Tusker FC in the quarter-final on Wednesday afternoon at Ruaraka Grounds. The tricky winger miscuing a cross and the impact of his action consequently leaving him with a knee problem that was bandaged heavily.

“Owiti’s injury was non-contact that came as a result of landing badly and it really swelled up. We will note the extent of the injury after conducting scans but the two are likely to be sidelined for months,” Ingwe medic revealed.

The injury to the two threatens to stretch the squad even further after head coach Patrick Aussems had earlier expressed displeasure to the depth of his squad.

“We know it is not going to be easy and now we are approaching a busy schedule. I don’t have a large group, but I am happy some players are back and performing well. We will need everyone to be at their best if we are to win the Football Kenya Federation Premier League,” the head coach stated at the tail end of May.

Leopards, who currently sit third on the log on 36 points –two behind log leading Tusker -, will be looking for a final CAF Champions League push when they take on stern tests in Sofapaka, Wazito and Kariobangi Sharks respectively before the 30th June deadline where the continental participant is set to be determined.
