Borussia bosses furious with Chelsea over defender loan deal

Aaron Anselmino is back in London as the Blues activated an option in his contract

When loan deals are made, usually there are options for a recall. It’s nothing unusual, especially when young players are involved, as sometimes the loan deals don’t end out as played and the youngster is pulled back in order to get more playing time in another team. But in the case of big clubs, these things usually don’t happen. Still, Chelsea decided that their current injury crisis is good enough reason for recalling Aaron Anselmino from Borussia Dortmund and the Blues got their man. But they also angered their colleagues from the Bundesliga.

The BVB bosses are reportedly furious with their counterparts at Chelsea FC. While they acknowledge that the move is contractually within the English club's rights, it puts Borussia under pressure in several respects. First of all, the Blues gave no indications that they will recall Anselmino. Then, they gave a really short notice and left Dortmund with one defender short just days before the January transfer window shuts. Now, the German club is facing a dilemma – should they try to find a suitable replacement with only seven days left, or do they risk in the second part of the season and bring in nobody? They only have Niklas Sule, who is out of form (with an enormous wage).

The other reason (apart from no notice of taking Anselmino) is that secretly, Dortmund executives hoped that they could try to sign the Argentinian defender permanently in June, but since he only played 10 games so far, they won’t have a clear opinion of the player, since he returned to London and will probably be only a reserve player, giving coach Liam Rosenior enough options at the back. Former manager Enzo Maresca also complained about the shortage of defenders. Chelsea now have Anselmino, Tosin Adarabioyo, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana and Jorrel Hato as options. Mamadou Sarr is on loan with a similar break clause option and long-term absentee Levi Colwill remains injured. Dortmund are now short of defenders.
