The clash between 3K FC and Fortune Sacco was far from an ordinary National Super League encounter.

Staged at Moi Stadium on Sunday, the clash brought together the two neighbouring sides, with fans filling the venue to witness the fierce rivalry, battle for bragging rights and, most importantly, celebrate the beautiful game.

Days before the contest, social media was awash with hype, with many fans branding the fixture the 'Majirani Derby', a nickname inspired by the proximity of the two sides.

And true to the hype, the match lived up to the hype, with 3K grabbing maximum points and the right to walk with their shoulders high, following their hard-fought 2-1 win.

Although 3K were enjoying massive home support and playing on a familiar surface, their goalkeeper, Emmanuel Kutwa, was the busiest in the opening quarter and the first half by extension, making fine saves whenever called upon.

The league's leading scorer, Collins Mwangi, was a thorn in the flesh of the 3K defence, using his big biceps and masculine body to bully his markers and make runs behind them.

However, he was reduced to holding up play for the better part of the first half, as his markers never afforded him breathing space.

While the 3K defence had Mwangi giving them something to do, Mark Kithome was the main man troubling the Fortune back line with his explosive runs and trickery on the ball.

Those were not the isolated battles on the pitch, as the fight to get it right tactically was also witnessed, with 3K going long while Fortune prioritised patient build-ups.

Once the teams recovered from the nervous start that witnessed loads of long balls, play was largely concentrated in midfield, with few chances being witnessed.

Then came the biggest moment of the half when Ronald Karerwa gave 3K the lead in the dying moments of the first half.

A lapse in concentration allowed Kithome room to burst into full speed on the left before whipping in a low cross that Karerwa was well-positioned to poke home for the opener.

The Fortune back line, along with goalkeeper Malvin Nderitu, will blame themselves for failing to deal with what looked like a harmless cut back, as it gifted Karerwa the chance to break the deadlock.

Second Half

Whatever coach Vincent Nyaberi might have told his charges at halftime was dismantled within a minute into the second half, as 3K needed just seconds to double their advantage.

A free kick awarded just inches away from the technical area was headed home, much to the jubilation of 3K fans, who broke into song and dance after the goal.

Michael Amwayi expertly whipped the ball into the area, with Newton Njue reacting quickest to meet the ball ahead of the advancing Nderitu.

Once again, the Fortune back line will review the situation and feel that they could have done better, as they were slow to react to the first ball.

Mwangi pulled one back for Fortune in the 68th minute, heading a free kick by Victor Matete. Before the goal, Fortune had brought in Elvine Barasa for Alfred Irungu

The game was momentarily paused in the 85th minute following crowd trouble on the Eastern stand occupied by Fortune fans.

However, the police and stewards managed to stop them from marching to the field of play and possibly harming the assistant referee, whom they faulted for failing to award them a corner kick.

Former FIFA referee Andrew Juma, who was the match commissioner, also joined in to help contain the situation.

When play resumed, 3K held on to the final whistle to pick all three points and move to second on the log.
