In a ceremony held on Wednesday, 10 September in Nairobi, Kenya, Maduot handed over the leadership of the council to Burundi Football Federation President Gen. Bde Pol Alexandre Muyenge.
Muyenge will be in charge of the regional body, albeit in an acting capacity, until the elective General Assembly in 2026, when a substantive chairperson will be elected.
Maduot took over from Wallace Karia, the President of the Tanzania Football Federation, who currently sits on the CAF Executive Committee representing the CECAFA zone, following elections on 12 May.
Maduot, who is also the President of the South Sudanese FA, was the first from his country to hold such a position since South Sudan joined CAF and FIFA more than 13 years ago.
His election was another testament to the growth of football in South Sudan, which saw them, among others, hold the CECAFA General Assembly in Juba earlier this year.
Maduot highlighted the progress made in pursuit of building a CECAFA headquarters, the revival of the CECAFA Kagame Cup and youth competitions as part of the progress of CECAFA.
Maduot‘s tenure was expected to see an intensified focus on football development with efforts aimed at increasing the region’s visibility and competitiveness on the continent.
With only about four months in office, Maduot’s vision will now be passed on to Muyenge, who pledged to carry on with the mission, at least before the elections are held.
Former FKF Vice President Doris Petra sits on the Executive Committee of CECAFA as a member and was present during the Wednesday handover ceremony.
Kenya's 2024 CHAN and 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairperson Nicholas Musonye was also a long-serving Secretary General at CECAFA before exiting in 2020.
September has been a busy month at CECAFA as the Kagame Cup made a return and is ongoing in Tanzania, while the Women's CAF Champions League - CECAFA region qualifiers are also ongoing in Kenya.
