Kariobangi Sharks goalkeeper ends speculations on his future by penning a lengthy deal

Kariobangi Sharks goalkeeper Brian Bwire has renewed his stay at the club after signing a four-year-long contract extension.

The custodian was heavily linked with a move abroad at the start of the month but he has confirmed his allegiance to the former Football Kenya Federation Shield Cup holders by penning a lengthy contract.

The youthful goalkeeper's future at the club was a heavy subject of discussion within football circles after mysteriously missing the club's four league matches against Vihiga United, KCB, Posta Rangers and Mathare United leaving coach William Muluya to rely on Brandon Obiero.

Bwire joined Sharks in 2017 while at Kakamega High School but linked up with the team the following year after clearing his studies.

He however had to wait for almost three years to become the first choice thanks to the presence of the trio of John Oyemba, Robert Mboya and Gad Mathews.

He was eventually confirmed as the first choice in late 2019 after Oyemba suffered a career-threatening back injury which saw him leave Sharks in January last year to concentrate on his full recovery.

The former national U20, Rising Stars captain who led the team to scoop sliver during the 2019 CECAFA championships in Uganda was handed a rare and his first Harambee Stars call-up in 2018 after impressing coach Sebastien Migne in his Sharks debut against Tusker at Camp Toyoyo.

Bwire was in goal when Sharks made history after beating English side Everton 4-3 in post-match penalties in an international friendly match in 2019 had seven months remaining in his initial contract.

"I have renewed my love for Sharks and will stay at the club for the next four years.I know during my absence the club conceded a goal in four matches and thus I have to work hard to return to the starting team. I am focused on helping the team achieve its targets when the league resumes," he said.

Bwire who was a strong candidate for the starting roles for the Africa Cup of Nations build-up matches against South Sudan and Tanzania says he is hungrier to return to the national team.

The gloveman was jettisoned from the provisional squad apparently after picking a knock, and subsequently missed the two matches as well as the qualifier against Egypt on Thursday. Bidco United goalkeeper Adisa Omar was in goal against South Sudan while Ulinzi's James Saruni took charge against Tanzania.

"I have no regrets for missing the opportunity to make my first national team appearance. I would have wished to make my Stars debut but I believe the chance and time wasn't mine. I will go back to the drawing board and work harder to convince the national team technical bench to incorporate me in the World Cup qualifiers or any other international assignments," he added.
