CAF African Schools Football Championship: Tanzania's Fountain Gate grouped with South African and Gambian opponents

Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School (girls) and Uganda’s Royal Giant High School (boys) are representing the CECAFA region at the finals after emerging triumphant in the zonal qualifiers held in Tanzania in February this year.

Tanzania's Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School has been drawn in Group A of the inaugural CAF African Schools Football Championship finals alongside Edendale Technical School of South Africa and Scan Aid of The Gambia in the girls' category following a draw conducted on Tuesday.

The championships, will start on Wednesday in Durban, South Africa.

In the boys' category, Uganda's Royal Giants High School have been grouped in Group B together with Salima Secondary School of Malawi, Complexe Scolaire Ben Sekou Sylla of Guinea, and CEG Sainte Rita of Benin.

The competition will get underway on Wednesday at the King Zwelithini Stadium with consecutive matches in the boys and girls events involving South African sides.

Former Vihiga Queens coach Alex Alumirah guided Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School (Girls) to win the CAF Africa Schools Football Championship CECAFA Zone Qualifiers title, beating Ethiopia's Awaro SS 3-0 in the final, pocketing $100,000 (Ksh 12,472,550).

Alumirah will be in the company of another Kenyan, Millicent Oyango, who has been tasked with working with the team doctor as well as acting as a safeguarder.

The group stages and semifinals in both events will be completed on Day 2 of the competition on Thursday, with the third-place play-off and final to be staged at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday. Friday will be a rest day.

The Motsepe Foundation has donated USD 10 million in prize money for the tournament, making it comfortably the richest school’s event on African soil.

The winners of the boys’ and girls’ competitions will receive USD 300,000 each. The runners-up receive USD 200,000 and the bronze medal winners take home USD 150,000.
