The name change is a strategy to attract sponsors according to a club supremo

National Super League (NSL) side Coastal Heroes have completed the process of renaming the team to Mombasa Stars, Chairman, Kennedy Onukho has confirmed.

The team, previosly known as Coast Stima, has been using the name since the start of 2020/2021 season when Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) withdrew their sponsorship citing low revenue cash flow cutting tie with Stars, Western Stima and Nairobi Stima all defunct now.

Coastal Heroes were then taken over by several Coast-based business persons and politicians. However, this was not enough to run the club's expenses and they have now completely severed ties with them and opted to rename the club to Mombasa Stars.

However, the club's base will remain at Mbaraki Sports Club. Chairman Onukho and coach Mohammed Madaga are also set to maintain their positions.

"We have changed the name after a wider consultation with our stakeholders who are comfortable with the name Mombasa Stars and so I can confirm our new name is Mombasa Stars Football Club," he told Mozzart Sport.

According to Onukho sponsorship reasons are what initiated the name change with most people associating the name to a private entity in the region and it has made it difficult for them to nail a sponsor as the team continues to struggle financially.

"Currently we are in the process of sourcing a sponsor but with the Coastal Heroes name, it became very difficult as most people associate us to businessmen and politicians here in Mombasa," he added.

The football administrator further called on stakeholders and cooperates in the country to come out in large numbers and salvage some of the clubs in Kenya that are nearing their deathbed.

"I call out those enable stakeholders and companies to come out and support our club's. Most talents are wasting away as teams cannot afford to keep them in the camp without money." He concluded.

The team is known for production and development of talents from the region and Onukho says they want to be stable again so that they can continue giving opportunities to young players.
