Vihiga Queens are currently second in Group B and need to win their last group fixture to progress to the zonal qualifier semis

Vihiga Queens’ striking duo of Maurine Achieng’ and Violet Wanyonyi have vowed to help Kenya have a participant in the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League by helping Queens book a place in the tournament by winning in the CECAFA Women’s Champions League Qualifiers currently taking place in Nairobi.

In order to qualify for the women’s continental tournament, Queens need to win their zonal qualifiers as only the winner advances to the eight team competition set to be held in Egypt later this year. The format in the first edition will see champions of each of the six CAF Zones play for a spot in the competition. They are joined by the hosts and a wild card entry.

Despite losing 4-2 in their opening group B match against Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC, Queens laid a marked of intent as they bludgeoned Yei Joint Stars from South Sudan 11-0 in the second qualifying match to go second on the table on superior goal difference.

With Queens needing to win their last group match against Zanzibar’s New Generation who are yet to put points on board, Wanyonyi and Maurine who scored four goals and three goals respectively in the 11-0 rout are determined to see to it that Queens go all the way in ensuring that the zonal qualifiers title stays at home and that Kenya are represented on the big stage.

“After losing the opening match, we went back and trained really hard as we psyched and motivated ourselves ahead of the second match. We came in this second game with a lot of confidence and the performance reflected our motivation and morale. We still have one more match and even if we come out of the group stages as the second placed team, we are not fazed. We know we have a chance and I want to assure Kenyans that this trophy stays on home soil,” a confident Wanyonyi who has four goals in the tournament revealed after the match.

Maurine who has five goals after bagging a brace in the first match and a hat trick in the second echoed the same sentiments as her teammate.

Kenya take on New Generation on Friday in the final group match at Nyayo National Stadium.
