After facing untimely withdrawals and a huge turn-around of players in camp, the South African has his work cut out ahead of CHAN
Ahead of Harambee Stars’ much-anticipated Group A CHAN 2024 opener against DR Congo, head coach Benni McCarthy has admitted to a mounting selection dilemma, citing intense competition within the squad.
Speaking during a pre-match interview, the South African tactician, who was appointed in March, admitted to facing tough selection headache for Kenya starting XI but maintained an air of optimism, expressing full confidence in the quality and commitment of the final squad.

“We’ve had solid preparations, with tremendous backing from the government. The boys are mentally and physically ready to represent Kenya. But I must confess choosing the starting XI has been tough. The players have shown great hunger and drive. Still, we believe in the group that will be selected, and I am confident they will make us all proud,” he said.
Kenya’s preparations were severely affected by the absence of key players.
FKF Premier League top scorer Moses Shumah and runner-up Emmanuel Osoro, initially included in the provisional squad, opted to pursue professional deals abroad. Both forwards have since joined Zambian giants Power Dynamos, leaving gaps in M’Carthy’s attacking options.
Compounding the coach’s woes, rising sensation Mohamed Bajaber departed camp last week to finalize a transfer to Tanzanian heavyweights Simba SC, which was announced on Saturday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Bandari defender Pamba Swaleh and Kenya Police midfielder Brian Musa were ruled out due to medical concerns to Swaleh with a heart condition, and Musa following a knee injury.
To plug the void, McCarthy recalled newly signed Kenya Police forward Edward Omondi, Shabana attacker Brian Michira, and Tusker FC’s Christopher Erambo.
Additionally, the former Manchester United striker coach believes the unwavering support from fans will fuel the team’s performance.
He drew inspiration from the electric atmosphere during Kenya’s recent World Cup qualifier against Gabon at a fully packed Nyayo National Stadium.

“We lost that match, but the support was overwhelming. This time, Kasarani Stadium which is even larger is already sold out. That kind of backing lifts players. We’re determined to do our best and give our fans something to celebrate,” he added.
Adding to the team’s motivation was an early morning visit from President William Ruto, who shared breakfast with the squad before announcing a lucrative incentive package.
Each player stands to earn Ksh1 million for every win and Ksh500,000 for a draw. Additionally, the government pledged Ksh60 million should the team reach the quarter-finals, Ksh70 million for the semi-finals, and a staggering Ksh600 million if Kenya wins the tournament.
“The president’s visit has energized the team. His support, both moral and financial, is a big boost. We have been fortunate to engage with him more than once, and we don’t want to disappoint him or Kenyans. Our goal is to bring joy to the country,” McCarthy said.
Kenya’s Group A journey begins on Sunday 3 August at 3:00 pm at Kasarani Stadium, with the second fixture of the day pitting Morocco vs Angola from 6:00 pm at Nyayo National Stadium. Historically, Kenya and DR Congo have clashed seven times.
