In a video that quickly went viral, Sonko pledged a Ksh400 million reward to the team, boosting national morale and doubling down on the government's promise of support.
The outspoken politician further committed to topping up President William Ruto’s earlier pledge of Ksh600 million, contingent on Kenya lifting the CHAN trophy.
“I was confident Harambee Stars would perform well, and they did not disappoint. I’m also proud of the fans who showed up and conducted themselves with dignity,” Sonko remarked.
“Enjoy the president’s Ksh1 million per player for the win, and remember, if you go all the way, Ksh1 billion awaits you.”
President Ruto had earlier set the tone by promising Ksh1 million to each squad member for every match won, Ksh500,000 for draws, Ksh60 million for a quarterfinal berth, Ksh70 million for a semifinal appearance, and a staggering Ksh600 million should the team claim the championship.
The promises come amid a wave of national excitement and growing belief in the squad, who made their CHAN debut with a hard-fought 1-0 win against the highly rated Congolese side at the Kasarani Stadium.
Austin Odhiambo's clinical strike at the stroke of halftime proved decisive, as Kenya announced their arrival on the continental stage in style.
The victory places Kenya second in Group A with three points, tied with leaders Morocco, albeit on goal difference following The Atlas Lions' 2-0 win over Angola at Nyayo National Stadium shortly after Harambee's triumph.
Kenya will return to action on Thursday, 7 August, against Angola, before facing 2018 and 2020 CHAN winners Morocco on Sunday, 10 August.
They will conclude their group stage campaign against Zambia on Sunday, 17 August, with all matches scheduled at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
In the lead-up to the tournament, the team had also received a Ksh1 million motivational package from a parliamentary delegation led by Rarieda MP and Bunge FC captain Otiende Amollo.
The move was part of a broader national campaign to uplift and support Harambee Stars in their historic CHAN debut.
