The Belgian was soon after the match signed by the Blues but he was not invited to Allianz Arena to watch the showpiece
The holy trinity of players casted away from Stamford Bridge continued their careers in a magnificent way.
Romelu Lukaku is the newly crowned champion of Italy with Inter, Mohamed Salah collected Champions League and Premier League medals in two years with Liverpool and last but not least - Kevin De Bruyne, the offensive architect of Manchester City.
The Belgian is one step away from winning the Champions League himself but in his way stands his former club who did not appreciate his talent. Now he has his opportunity for revenge.
Chelsea won the biggest European club competition nine years ago and just four months after lifting the trophy, they brought in the talented De Bruyne from his homeland side Genk.
An interesting story comes from that period - Kevin De Bruyne says he was not invited to watch Chelsea's Champions League triumph despite the fact the club were after his signature and were eager for him to put on the shirt of the reigning champions of Europe.
Citizens playmaker says he really can't remember much from that thriller final which saw Chelsea stun Bayern at Munich in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
De Bruyne even said he does not remember Didier Drogba's decisive penalty or his celebration at all.
Chelsea brought De Bruyne to Stamford Bridge for 1 billion KSH from Genk on a five-and-a-half-year deal in 2012. An uncool move from the club was that they forgot to invite him to the Champions League final at Allianz Arena.
Speaking to The Sun about Chelsea's triumph, De Bruyne says he can't even remember watching his new club's success on television.
'I wasn't there. I don't think I was invited. I don't remember much about it to be honest.' Belgian said.
'With Champions League finals, sometimes I watch them – sometimes not. It just depends on the situation. I don't recall too much about that one.'
He says he is confident in Manchester City's ability to overcome the Blues and claim the trophy. However, Chelsea will be eager to repeat history on Saturday night and bring another Champions League title to their cabinets.
De Bruyne also reflected on City's track record in the Champions League before saying this year has been 'different'.
'I had the feeling from the beginning here. People talk about failure when you don't win the Champions League but it's so difficult to win it.' said the 29-year-old.
'We've been fighting for it for the last six years – we've always been around the quarter finals, semi-finals. Always been around the best eight teams in Europe.
'But when you play knock-out, small situations can make a difference.
'In the bad situations, we maybe made too many mistakes and this year we didn't. We've been very compact when it became difficult. We've done it in the right way this year.'
The showpiece take place tomorrow night at Dragao Stadium in Porto and the whole football public expects, or at least hopes, two Premier League powerhouses will present us with a finals-worthy performance.
