City hit Turf Moor without Rodri - title charge faces first real test
Reading Time: 3min | Wed. 22.04.26. | 11:30
Manchester City chase top spot against Burnley, but must do it without the Spaniard as Pep Guardiola juggles injuries, pressure, and a relentless run-in (10 pm)
Pep Guardiola's men arrive at Turf Moor with momentum, but not without problems.
The champions edged past Arsenal in a statement 2-1 win at the weekend, a result that shook up the title race. Now comes the part that defines champions: backing it up. A victory over Burnley tonight would send the Cityzens to the top of the Premier League table for the first time since August.
But Pep will have to navigate this crucial stretch without his midfield metronome.
Rodri has been ruled out after picking up a groin issue late in the win over Arsenal. While the injury is not considered serious, it is enough to sideline him for this clash, and possibly the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton.
"I don't think he will be ready for tomorrow," Guardiola admitted. "Maybe for the semi-final, or in 12-13 days."
Defensive absences continue to stack up as well, with Ruben Dias still out and Josko Gvardiol unavailable long-term. Even so, City head into the run-in in relatively strong shape, and with no margin for error.
Guardiola has already warned that rotation will be inevitable as fixtures pile up, but tonight is not the moment for heavy experimentation. With six league games remaining and Arsenal setting the pace for much of the season, the message is clear: win, or risk falling behind for good.
"That shows how consistent they've been," Guardiola said of Arsenal's long spell at the summit. "We both know we cannot drop points now."
Burnley, meanwhile, are fighting for survival. Defeat would confirm relegation after a difficult campaign under Scott Parker, adding another layer of urgency to an already high-stakes night.
City are expected to make only minimal changes. Gianluigi Donnarumma should stay between the sticks, with a settled back line in front of him. Bernardo Silva is free to play after avoiding suspension, while Rodri's absence could open the door for Nico Gonzalez to step into midfield.
Further forward, the attacking setup is unlikely to change. Erling Haaland leads the line, flanked by Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo, with creativity expected from Rayan Cherki in the No.10 role.
Options are waiting - Phil Foden, Omar Marmoush, and Savinho more than others - but this is no time to hold back. Guardiola may shuffle the pack for the cup tie at Wembley, yet in the league, it's full throttle from here. Because after the statement came on Sunday, only one thing matters now: finishing the job.
