Manchester City overcome Spurs at Wembley thanks to a late Aymeric Laporte header

Aymeric Laporte scored the only goal of the League Cup Final to give Manchester City a deserved win over Tottenham Hotspur and the trophy in front of 7,773 fans at Wembley Stadium. Spurs were second-best for most of the game as Citizens dominated the game with their familiar brand of possession football.

Pep Guardiola led his City team to the eighth League Cup win, making them the most successful team in the competition’s history. There was no Jose Mourinho in the opposing dugout, but rookie interim manager Ryan Mason who was always going to struggle against one of the best coaches in the world.

Phil Foden had the best chance in the first half fell for Phil Foden, but the young Englishman’s shot cannoned off the post as Spurs defended desperately. Manchester City had most of the possession and were dangerous with Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne pulling all the strings.

Spurs were restricted to rare counter-attacks, but they did have their chances to open the scoring against the run of play – but it simply wasn’t their day.

France international Laporte rose the highest to send a thumping header past his compatriot Hugo Lloris with around ten minutes to go. Spurs never looked like mounting a dramatic comeback as City kept the ball with conviction and calmness until the final whistle.

Not only it was the first major trophy of the season on offer at Wembley, but the match was made special by the fans in the stands – finally!

For the first time in 13 months, a football match in England witnessed fans from both teams inside the stadium as part of a series of test events. To get into Wembley, fans had to take a lateral flow coronavirus test at a designated site in the 24 hours before the game and produce evidence of a negative result. They also had to take two PCR tests at home - one before travelling to the match and another five days afterwards.
