Amboko took over the head coach role on an interim basis after Sanjin Alagic stepped down from the role

Nairobi City Stars interim head coach John Amboko is steering clear of discussion over possibilities of being a permanent replacement to immediate former head coach Sanjin Alagic who left the club upon expiry of his contract.

Back on 16th July, immediately after holding defending champions Gor Mahia to a 1-1 draw, Sanjin left the club on mutual consent after a two year stay at the helm of the Kawangware based side. With City Stars sitting in 7th position on 37 points, Amboko, who was Sanjin’s assistant, was entrusted with the head coaching capacity on a short term basis until the end of the season.

Although his reign got off to a draw and a defeat in the first two games, the former player turned coach has turned around the fortunes of his spell as he managed to lead the Kawangware based side to back to back wins. Performances that, although coupled with the fortunate docking of points to AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, have lifted the club to third position in the league.

With the top seat yet to be decided with only three games left before the season wraps up, Amboko evaded the question of whether he would love to take charge of the club on a permanent basis.

“My focus right now is just focusing on the remaining games before the season wraps up. When it comes to who will be in charge next season, we will cross that bridge when we get there. For now it is just about finishing as high as we can,” he told Mozzart Sport.

In the four games the head coach has overseen, he has won two, drawn one and lost one.
